the massive snow storm in the north east - the daily rant

NORTHEAST BRACES ITSELF FOR STORM

?By: Derek Varsalona

?It seems like only yesterday, that we were recovering from super storm Hurricane Sandy.? And if that was not enough for the North East, we are now faced with a massive snow storm on the way, which started as I was getting out of work last night around 4:45pm at least in Nassau County.? The storm has hit the entire North East.

???? ?

Living with Cerebral Palsy is very difficult, especially when you live in the North East.? I already know that this storm is not going too be good and I do not need a weather man to tell me this.? My muscles tighten in cold weather almost squashing me.? But I live with the pain, the humidity down south is no good either, I need dry heat.? So this is just the pre-storm tonight and I am already tightening up.? I just don?t know how I will deal with Saturday.

???? ?

This storm is very serious business.? I herd my County Executive Edward P. Mangano issuing warnings and Governor Deval Patrick (D-M.A.) made an ordered declaring all vehicles be off the road.? The state of Maine has gotten international extra help, Canadian clean up crews are already in Maine.? There will be massive flooding along the East Coast. From what I hear all flights leaving the East Coast have been grounded as a precaution.

???? ?

But I do have some good news and a bright spot.? This is actually good for the economy depending on which sector you are in.? If you are in travel and leisure, ski resorts may do well, although I do not see many people getting in their car on Long Island and heading to the Pocono?s or upstate for a two day weekend.? If this was a three day weekend it would be better.? Companies that make shovels, salt that deices walks ways will do very good, look for Poland Spring to do well with bottle water sales.

???? ?

As for me, Long Islanders can expect 14-18 inches along with major flooding.? This is in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and I fear for my fellow Long Islanders in Long Beach, the city did not do well in Hurricane Sandy, their famed boardwalk was demolished but to Sandy.? Stay safe my friends and my God Bless the people in the North East.? As always comments welcomed.

P.S. I know that I have not been writing daily, I am trying too with managing working full time. sorry for the inconvenience!!

Asthma & Allergy Specialists in Durham, North Carolina to Treat Allergies, Asthma, and More

Allergy Basics

What Is an Allergy?

Allergies are an abnormal response of the immune system. People who have allergies have an immune system that reacts to a usually harmless substance in the environment. This substance (pollen, mold, and animal dander, for example) is called an allergen.

Allergies are a very common problem, affecting at least two out of every 10 Americans.

What Happens During an Allergic Reaction?

First, a person is exposed to an allergen by inhaling it, swallowing it, or getting it on or under their skin. After a person is exposed to the allergen, a series of events create the allergic reaction:

  1. The body starts to produce a specific type of antibody, called IgE, to bind the allergen.

  2. The antibodies attach to a form of blood cell called a mast cell. Mast cells can be found in the airways, in the intestines, and elsewhere. The presence of mast cells in the airways and GI tract makes these areas more susceptible to allergen exposure.

  3. The allergens bind to the IgE, which is attached to the mast cell. This causes the mast cells to release a variety of chemicals into the blood. Histamine, the main chemical, causes most of the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Asthma Symptoms

Asthma is characterized by inflammation of the bronchial tubes with increased production of sticky secretions inside the tubes. People with asthma experience symptoms when the airways tighten, inflame, or fill with mucus. Common asthma symptoms include:

  • Coughing, especially at night

  • Wheezing

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest tightness, pain, or pressure

Still, not every person with asthma has the same symptoms in the same way. You may not have all of these symptoms, or you may have different symptoms at different times. Your asthma symptoms may also vary from one asthma attack to the next, being mild during one and severe during another.

Some people with asthma may go for extended periods without having any symptoms, interrupted by periodic worsening of their symptoms called asthma attacks. Others might have asthma symptoms every day. In addition, some people may only have asthma during exercise or asthma with viral infections like colds.

Mild asthma attacks are generally more common. Usually, the airways open up within a few minutes to a few hours. Severe attacks are less common but last longer and require immediate medical help. It is important to recognize and treat even mild asthma symptoms to help you prevent severe episodes and keep asthma under better control.

Know the Early Symptoms of Asthma

Early warning signs are changes that happen just before or at the very beginning of an asthma attack. These signs may start before the well-known symptoms of asthma and are the earliest signs that your asthma is worsening.

In general, these signs are not severe enough to stop you from going about your daily activities. But by recognizing these signs, you can stop an asthma attack or prevent one from getting worse. Early warning signs of asthma include:

  • Frequent cough, especially at night

  • Losing your breath easily or shortness of breath

  • Feeling very tired or weak when exercising

  • Wheezing or coughing after exercise

  • Feeling tired, easily upset, grouchy, or moody

  • Decreases or changes in lung function as measured on a peak flow meter

  • Signs of a cold or allergies (sneezing, runny nose, cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, and headache)

  • Trouble sleeping

If you have early warning signs or symptoms of asthma, you should take more asthma medication as described in your asthma action plan.

World"s Best Catfish At Tuckers Catfish Haven In North Richland Hills

It is Wednesday, so I went up to Southlake today a little before noon.

On my way back from my first stop in Southlake I went to Sprouts Farmers Market and got a lot of good stuff. I’ve never seen Sprouts so busy.

Were people stocking up for the upcoming return of winter with its possible Friday ice storm?

On the way back home, after Sprouts, I had been asked by an Anonymous Person to pick said person up at Tuckers Catfish Haven in North Richland Hills.

Why do so many people insist I not put their name in my blog? It perplexes me.

Anyway, I’d been in the Tuckers Catfish Haven parking lot previously. But I had not bothered to look at their sign. I read the sign today and was surprised to learn that in Tuckers Catfish Haven I could get the World’s Best Catfish.

I added the apostrophe to World’s. For some reason Tuckers does not seem to like apostrophes. It seems like it should be Tucker’s Catfish Haven, not Tuckers Catfish Haver. And it should be World’s Best, not Worlds Best.

Sorry about being an apostrophe Nazi.

I do not understand why catfish is so popular in these parts. There may be more catfish restaurants in the D/FW Metroplex than any other genre. Even BBQ. To my semi-refined tastebuds, catfish is, at best, flavorless, at worst you can bite into catfish that tastes like the mud the catfish bottom fed from.

The texture of catfish is mushy. Very unappealing. And then the catfish is usually deep-fried with a corn meal coating. Although I have seen catfish grilled in various ways, but none that tasted very good to me.

Usually with catfish you’ll get these things called hush puppies. These are little balls of deep-fried cornmeal dough, usually tasting the same as what the catfish is coated with.

So, I guess the thing I’ve learned today is if I want the World’s Best Catfish, which I don’t, I need to go to Tuckers Catfish Haven.
